Good to know before you go.

A few quick answers about how eSIMs work, how to install one, and what happens if your phone is not compatible.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a SIM built into your phone instead of a plastic card you slot in. It's activated by software — usually by scanning a QR code — so you can add a mobile plan or switch carriers without handling a physical card.

Can I use an eSIM and a physical SIM at the same time?

On most eSIM-capable phones, yes. You can keep your home SIM active for calls and texts while a travel data plan runs on the eSIM, and choose which line handles data. Some newer phones support two eSIMs at once instead of a physical tray.

How do I activate an eSIM once I've bought a plan?

You'll get a QR code and setup details. On iPhone, go to Settings › Cellular › Add eSIM and scan it. On Android, go to Settings › Network & internet › SIMs › Add eSIM and scan. Do it on Wi-Fi before you fly, then switch the plan on when you land. It takes a couple of minutes.

My phone isn't eSIM compatible — what now?

If there's no eSIM, you'll need a physical travel SIM instead, or a newer eSIM-capable phone. It's also worth double-checking with the dial code before giving up — some models hide the option in a different settings menu.
